Things To Do In Brighton UK

A brief history of Brighton

A beautiful seaside resort and popular tourist destination located in East Sussex on the south coast of England , Brighton has a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age, Roman, and Anglo-Saxon periods. Its importance grew in the Middle Ages as the Old Town developed, but it languished in the early modern period due to foreign attacks, storms, a struggling economy, and a declining population. However, it began to attract more visitors due to improved road transport to and from London, and becoming a boarding point for boats traveling to France.

Brighton also developed as a health resort for sea bathing, and in the Georgian era, it became a fashionable seaside resort. The arrival of railways in 1841 further fueled its growth as a major center of tourism. Major attractions in the Victorian era include the Grand Hotel, Hilton Brighton Metropole, Palace Pier, and West Pier. Brighton and Hove formed the unitary authority of Brighton and Hove in 1997, which was granted city status in 2012.
