After nearly cancelling this day trip as the result of our stay in Lisbon being cut short thanks to the expected cancelation of our original flight back to UK, I was so glad we listened to the ever so friendly hotel staff and finally made to Sintra. I wish we had more time there, and next time will definitely stay for a couple more of days or longer to fully appreciate its beauty. Highly recommend this fascinating place.

Another gem in Sintra is the mystical Quinta da Regaleira, an elaborate neo-gothic estate with enigmatic gardens concealing secret passages, symbols, and a Knights of Templar initiation well. Designed by an Italian architect and once owned by a Portuguese businessman with a passion for occultism, the gardens are a captivating maze of tunnels, caves, fountains, and statues, inviting exploration and discovery.
Sintra also features other remarkable palaces and castles like the Palácio Nacional de Sintra, Portugal’s oldest palace; the Castelo dos Mouros, an ancient Moorish fortress offering sweeping views; and the Palácio de Monserrate, an Arabian-inspired villa with exquisite gardens.
Beyond its rich cultural heritage, Sintra boasts diverse natural beauty, nestled within the Sintra-Cascais Nature Park spanning 145 km2, encompassing mountains, forests, cliffs, and beaches. The park is a sanctuary for various flora and fauna, some of which are unique or endangered. Visitors can engage in activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding, or surfing, while soaking in the stunning surroundings.
Sintra is home to some of the finest beaches, including Praia da Ursa, secluded with dramatic rock formations; Praia das Maçãs, a quaint beach town linked to Sintra by tram; and Praia do Guincho, a rugged surfers' paradise known for its strong winds and waves.
