Mary Anning was a remarkable figure in the early days of palaeontology. She was born in Lyme Regis, Dorset, in 1799 to a modest family. Despite her lack of formal education, she became one of the most accomplished fossil hunters of her time, discovering the first ichthyosaur skeleton and two plesiosaur skeletons.
Her work not only contributed to the scientific community but also challenged the gender norms of the era, as she navigated a predominantly male-dominated field with great success.
Mary Anning's work in the early nineteenth century was critical to the advancement of palaeontology. Her discoveries in the cliffs of Lyme Regis, on England's Jurassic Coast, revealed significant evidence of prehistoric life and influenced scientific thinking about Earth's history.
Anning's meticulous fossil discoveries, which included the first correctly identified ichthyosaur skeleton and several other important prehistoric creatures, established Lyme Regis as a critical site for Jurassic research and sparked a surge in scientific interest in the area.
