If you are looking for a charming and historic town in East Sussex, UK, you might want to consider Lewes as your next destination. Lewes has a lot to offer for visitors who are interested in culture, nature, and history. Here are some of the reasons why Lewes is worth to travel to.
- Lewes Castle and Barbican House Museum: This impressive medieval fortress was built by the Normans after the conquest of 1066 and offers stunning views of the town and the surrounding countryside. You can also explore the museum that showcases the history and archaeology of Lewes and the South Downs.
- Anne of Cleves House: This beautiful Tudor house was given to Anne of Cleves, the fourth wife of Henry VIII, as part of her divorce settlement. You can see how the Tudors and Elizabethans lived, worked, and relaxed at home, and enjoy the authentic kitchen and garden.
- Southover Grange Gardens: This tranquil walled garden was once the private garden of a 16th century grange. It features a peace garden, a fountain, a disused well, and a variety of plants that were used by the monks for medicinal, culinary, and ceremonial purposes.
- Priory of St Pancras: This is the site of a former Cluniac monastery that was founded in 1078 and dissolved in 1538. You can see the remains of the priory church, cloister, chapter house, and dormitory, and learn about the life and fate of the monks.
- Harvey's Brewery: This is a working brewery that has been producing traditional cask ales since 1790. You can take a guided tour of the brewery, sample some of their award-winning beers, and visit their shop and tap room.
Lewes is a town that combines history, culture, and nature in a delightful way. It is a perfect place to enjoy a day out or a longer stay in East Sussex.

The best months to visit include May, June, and September, which offer mild weather and beautiful South Downs National Park.
July and August offer beach and summer vibes, with average temperatures around 20°C. However, these months can be wettest and busiest, with showers and queues.
The off-season, from October to April, offers colder and cloudier weather, but still offers opportunities to explore Lewes Castle, Anne of Cleves House, and Charleston.
