Lagos Algarve

I fell in love with the Algarve on our first trip to Portugal in early spring of 2023, and found Lagos is especially appealing when it comes to beaches and coastlines. It was a perfect place to recharge my batteries after a long, depressing winter and a bad flu that took me a couple of weeks to recover. My dad unexpectedly passed away in January, I was inconsolable, suddenly couldn't sleep, and lost my sense of enjoyment and joy. I was deeply saddened that I didn’t get to look after him and see him for the last time. It was not helped by a colder and much wetter than usual winter season. I felt like I was desperately in need of some sunshine to warm me up from the inside out, to heal and rejuvenate my body and soul. So, when my husband and I finally booked our Portugal trip from the Algarve to Lisbon, I was so looking forward to our first trip abroad since 2019 and dying to take myself away from the overcast sky, the despondency and the despair.

The beauty of Lagos and the places we visited, the friendliness of the Portuguese people, the delicious local cuisines, and the warm sun never failed to disappoint us. Portugal will always hold a special place in my heart, so I’ll definitely return to this fascinating country again and again in the future.

Best time to visit Lagos

Lagos is a charming Portuguese city with gorgeous beaches and a Mediterranean climate. June through August are the ideal months to visit Lagos because of the city's average temperature of 28°C and little rainfall. You can take pleasure in the vibrant summer festivals, picturesque cliffs, and golden beaches. Lagos experiences mild winters due to its Mediterranean climate, so you can also visit in other seasons if you prefer less crowds and lower prices.

I am glad our first trip to Lagos was in March, the weather was warm and sunny, it was definite more enjoyable with less tourists wherever we went, specially on the beaches.

How to get there

Depending on your preferences and budget, you have a few options for how to get to Lagos, Algarve. Lagos is about 90 km west of Faro, the capital of the Algarve and the main airport in the region. You can get to Lagos by car, train, bus or taxi. You can also travel by bus or train if you're traveling from Lisbon; the trip will take about four hours.

- By car: The fastest way to get to Lagos by car is to take the A22 motorway, also known as Via do Infante. The journey takes about an hour and costs around 8 euros in tolls. Alternatively, you can take the N125 national road, which is free but slower and more congested. The journey takes about an hour and a half.

- By train: This was what we used. There is a regional train service that connects Faro to Lagos, stopping at several towns along the way. The journey takes about an hour and 40 minutes and costs around 7 euros. You can buy tickets online or at the station. The train station in Lagos is near the marina and a short walk from the city center.

- By bus: There are several bus companies that operate between Faro and Lagos, such as Eva Transportes, Rede Expressos and Renex. The journey takes about an hour and 45 minutes and costs around 6 euros. You can buy tickets online or at the bus station. The bus station in Lagos is in the city center, close to the main attractions.

- By taxi or private shuttle service. This would be our preferred choice if Lagos was our first stop in last spring. We hired tax from Faro airport to Tavira directly. So if you prefer a more comfortable and convenient option, you can take a taxi from Faro airport to Lagos. The journey takes about an hour and costs around 80 euros. You can book a taxi online. We booked with Yellowfish Transers, but you can easiy find one at the airport.
